The internet of the future at DreamHack – the world’s largest computer festival

A bandwidth of 40 gigabit per second and a capacity of 92 terabit per second. That is the bandwidth that Telia and Cisco, for the first time in the Nordics, will supply the world’s largest computer festival DreamHack and its participants with.– DreamHack is nowadays also what we call DreamLab, a digital platform where tomorrow's technology and our participants meet. The people that attend DreamHack are very informed and are also critical users, says David Garpenståhl, DreamHack’s chairman.The broadband experience delivered at DreamHack Winter 2007 will be without comparison. The participants will be the first in the Nordic region to use a new technology that manages a bandwidth of 40 gigabit per second. Telia supplies the high tech fibre optical network that delivers the staggering bandwidth and Cisco provides the world's fastest internet router, the Cisco CRS-1, which can handle 92 terabit per second. That is a thousand times more data than the capacity of the largest internet hub in Sweden. An internet hub is the physical connection between different internet operators.– DreamHack is connected to the world's fastest router, the Cisco CRS-1. Fully configured, the router has the capacity to let one billion persons play online games through it simultaneously. The router is a proof of that the future of internet already has arrived and that Cisco is the global leader in this segment, says Sverker Hannervall, CEO at Cisco Sweden.The explosive traffic growth on the internet requires that the bandwidth capacity of the physical nets grows proportionally. Telia and Cisco can offer products and solutions to fill the demand of faster internet.– Games, moving images and streaming media is what drives the development today, says Erik Hallberg, manager of broadband services at Telia Sweden. A bandwidth of 40 gigabit per second enables 10 000 simultaneous TV-channels or video-on-demand movies at the same time. This will take internet to the next level. The capacity of the Cisco CRS-1 enables:• All the people on the planet to make VoIP calls at the same time• One billion people to play online games with real time voice and text chat simultaneously• 15 million people to watch streaming HD video simultaneously.

The total value of the equipment provided by Cisco and Telia is SEK 45 million. Cisco contributes equipment for 40 million, while Telia contribute with equipment for SEK 5 million.
